You’ve signed up for a short-term outreach with OM this summer (yay!), and you’ve got three weeks until you head off, whether with your church or solo. Now what? Whether you’re participating in our Race Across Europe program, helping plant a church in Panama, or going off the grid in New Zealand this summer, here are some tips to help you get ready before you go and serve:

1. Pray

Prayer might seem obvious, but it's one of the most powerful tools you have! Pray for safety, that you will feel God's presence throughout your journey, that your heart will be challenged and transformed, and that you will draw closer to Him. Pray for the community or church you’re visiting, that hearts will be softened to receive Christ, and for meaningful, language-transcending conversations. Remember, prayer is your direct line to God’s guidance and support.

2. Gather Support

Engage your church, family, and friends in supporting you through prayer and encouragement. Your church will likely be excited to hear updates about your experiences, testimonies, and transformational stories when you return. Every church is eager to share in the work of spreading Jesus’ message, so involve them in your journey. This support network will provide you with spiritual and emotional strength.

3. Know Your Environment!

Make sure you understand the environment you'll be entering. This goes beyond packing the right clothes—though that’s important too! Avoid taking unnecessary items like mosquito repellent to Norway and a thick scarf to Papua New Guinea. Different cultures may have specific clothing norms also, so check with your team leader or OM staff for a packing list and guidelines on what is appropriate. Being well-prepared will help you respect and integrate into the local culture more effectively.

4. Connect with OM Staff

Stay in touch with OM staff to address any concerns, anxieties, or questions you may have. They are there to support you and can provide valuable information and assistance with insurance, references, and other logistical details. Don’t hesitate to reach out—OM staff are more than happy to help ensure your trip goes smoothly.

5. Enjoy and Give God the Glory

Lastly, remember to enjoy your time serving in different cultures and communities. Your mission is to show God’s love to people who may have never heard His name. Practice gratitude for the opportunity to travel and connect with our global brothers and sisters. Thank God for His goodness and omnipresence and celebrate the chance to spread His love and message. Enjoy every moment and give all the glory to God!

By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared for your short-term outreach. Embrace the journey ahead, and may your service be impactful and fulfilling.
